Multi-award winner Alan Barnes is one of Britain’s most renowned and well-loved saxophonists; witty and charming, his distinctive touch and innate understanding of the idiom make him one of the country’s leading players. This concert marks the London premiere of an exceptional new album, Harlem Airshaft, with Tony Faulkner’s affectionate arrangements of the music of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington performed by a world class band that spans the jazz generations including Bruce Adams, Andy Panayi, John Horler and the peerless Tony Coe. Barnes plays music that was radical 50 years ago – hard, urban post-bop – but he infuses it with so much passion and energy you could believe it was minted on the spot. (The Guardian)

SCOTT HAMILTON – ALAN BARNES QUINTET
Pinner Parish Church, Church Lane,
Pinner, Middlesex HA5 3AA
What better way to start the New Year than with two of our most popular guests, namely the saxophonists Scott Hamilton and Alan Barnes? Regular visitors both, this is the first time they have appeared side-by-side for us, bringing to life a partnership that was outstandingly successful on record. Tasteful, profound and engagingly direct, theirs is music to savour, much aided by the rhythmic A-Team of pianist John Pearce, bassist Dave Green and Steve Brown on drums, none of whom needs a sat-nav to find their way to Pinner. Welcome back, one and all.
